Lagos state government has sacked 174 Officers of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) over corrupt practices which range from extortion of money and intimidation of motorists. These officers were largely junior officers who were fanatically committed in the discharge of their responsibilities especially in this era of new traffic law in the state but at the back of their minds, they were more interested in collecting bribes from the road users as a way out. Some of them will readily follow a defaulter to any nearby ATM machine to get money for their fine. Most of the times, the least amount they might collect from a defaulter is N5000. Before this amount is paid, the motor must have been confiscated throughout the whole day. While 34 officers were shown the way out two months ago, 140 others were red-carded last week days after they were tried, tested and discovered by the Lagos state civil service commission to be agents of corruption. A statement from the service indicated that Lagos state cannot condone indiscipline and corruption even in the face of implementing the new traffic laws of the state.
