Shortly after Roberto Di Matteo was sacked by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich yesterday, Rafa Benitez has indicated an unwavering interest in the Chelsea job. Now, he has been given the opportunity by Roman Abramovich to manage the team temporarily until a substantive manager is signed. He was in Abu Dhabi on coaching conference when the news of Di Matteo's sack was broken but he hurriedly flew into Uk in the evening.  He has been given a six months contract to manage the club. This means that Benitez's first assignment is to lead the team on EPL Sunday encounter with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. However, Pep Guardiola has been offered £15m
a year by Roman Abramovich but his agent indicated that Pep has nothing to say until in 2013 when he will make his coaching future public. It is worthy of note that this new decision to employ Benitez has not gone down well with Chelsea fans as they keep displaying banners showing their dislike for him especially when they remember his career at Liverpool. They have had a frosty relationship with him

Roberto Di Matteo released a statement last night and appreciated everyone for support but failed to thank Roman Abramovich and the senior management of the club. Roberto Di Matteo helped Chelsea last season to lift Championship trophy and also FA cup trophy but these gave Roman little or no second thought before he axed him yesterday.
