Executive arm of the government
has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to suspend the introduction of the
proposed N5000 by next year indefinitely.
According to federal government, this is to engage the Nigerian public
in more enlightenment about the benefits of the new note. I recall that the
national assembly on resumption last Tuesday unanimously agreed that the new
note should be suspended because of the unhealthy economic implications. But
Minister of information Labaran Maku
however noted that the decision of the national assembly and precisely the
senate is not binding since the central Bank of Nigeria is not responsible to
the national assembly but to the executive arm that appointed them. But deputy senate president was quick to add
that any decision taken in the senate was well thought of and patriotic and
should not be discarded any how.
