Green Tree Agreement: Bakassi Peninsula to Go to Cameroon Later Today

Bakassi Peninsula is an extension of Nigerian territory precisely in Cross Rive state  into the Atlantic Ocean. The Island is very rich in oil reserve. In October 10, 2002, the International Court of Justice in Hague, Netherlands ruled that the peninsula belongs to Cameroon  However, Nigeria has up to ten years to appeal against  the judgement. Nevertheless, government of federal republic did not do anything until just last week when the pressure was on the them to review the case, president Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a 10-man committee that will look at the case and advise the government on the way forward. In spite of this, the committee could not reach any common ground as the centre could not hold in their sitting. Attorney General of the federation gave a briefing last night that the hands of the federal government are tied. I order words, there is nothing Federal government can do a to avert ceding the oil rich island to Cameroon.

Residents of Bakassi Local government cried out recently that they would not join Cameroon for any reason. They swore that if nothing is done, the insurgence that will emanate from the inaction of the government will be more than that of Boko Haram.

Cameroon has partially taken control of the region but will take full control today. Residents have complained that many stern looking personalities suspected to be soldiers from Cameroon have continued to troop into the region. They lamented that they are being molested by the Soldiers and that their freedom are being lost.
